Job Description:

We are searching for a reliable, trustworthy, and innovative teacher to lead our multi-age Learning Pod. The teacher’s responsibilities include creating lesson plans and curricula focused on developing social, physical, intellectual, and emotional skills, assessing children’s individual needs, and communicating with parents as required. You should be able to create a nurturing, stimulating classroom where every child feels included. The successful candidate should be a lifelong learner who inspires a love for learning in our children. An ability to accept failure, learn from mistakes, and embrace creativity and independence is a must.

Responsibilities Include but are not limited to:

  • Observing, guiding, supervising, and assessing children while they learn in the classroom environment.
    • Guiding and supervising should not be limited to teacher’s own capabilities and should include creative ideas and requests for support where it could be helpful to the children. This may also include ensuring that children are properly challenging each other in learning activities to growth.
    • Assessment should include but will not be limited to:
      • Parent-Teacher Conferences regarding progress including a minimum of three (3) times during the year:
        • September to establish baseline and goals
        • January to establish mid-year progress
        • May to wrap up the traditional school year and identify areas to support during summer programming
      • Areas for support at home as well as at school
      • May include more frequent communication with parents as necessary to achieve each child’s goals.
  • Developing lesson plans, independent learning exercises, curricula, and methods that cater to the needs of the individual child.
    • Annual curricula as listed below should be evaluated to determine necessary tools (i.e. specific workbooks to be purchased or copied, etc.) prior to Summer / Fall Interlude so they can be available for teacher preparation during this week.
      • WinterPromise “Animals and their Worlds” as a basis
      • PLUS skill appropriate literacy and math curriculum
        • Letters to Little Words – Kinder
        • Syllables to Sentences, Paragraphs to Pages – First Grade
        • Living Math Level 1 – Kinder / First
      • Should include appropriate social emotional learning as well
    • Daily lesson plans should be prepared a minimum of two weeks in advance and available for review.
      • Should include lots of play and outside time as applicable.
      • Should include no more than 30 minutes per day of screen based learning.
  • Creating and maintaining a safe, clean, stimulating classroom where all children feel safe and valued.
    • To include helping to identify classroom / space improvements that help reach this goal.
    • Minimum schedule for cleaning:
      • Removing trash and recycle to the community cans each Friday
      • Wiping tables and chairs in classroom at least weekly
      • Sweeping / vacuuming classroom as appropriate at least weekly
      • Ensuring the children have properly cleared the table, pushed in chairs, returned supplies at lunch daily
      • Helping to complete other cleaning / maintenance tasks as appropriate (i.e. cleaning windows as appropriate; alerting of painting needs as appropriate)
      • Ensuring that appropriate work is taken home each week and that items to be held of exhibition / programs are nearly stored.
  • Establishing rapport and building relationships with students and parents based on trust.
  • Setting an excellent example for students and instilling good values in them like honesty, accountability, understanding, tolerance, respect, love, and kindness.
    • Should include community building expectations and activities such as proper etiquette at snacks/meals, requiring participation in cleaning and maintenance activities, etc.
  • Ensuring classroom supplies and equipment are available and in working condition.
  • Various other administrative tasks as necessary including but not limited to:
    • Maintaining student information for parent communication and emergency preparedness
  • Participating in school activities and accompanying students on field trips.
    • School activities to include at a minimum:
      • Winter Program – ideally in December
      • Spring Program – in May
      • At least one Parent / Community Event, preferably per semester
  • Interviewing and assisting with the training of all new teachers as applicable.

Teacher Requirements:

  • Passionate about alternative education.
  • An ability to teach groups of children of varying ages, needs, and abilities.
  • Patience and excellent observational, communication, and diagnostic skills.
  • The ability to multitask, keep calm under pressure, and treat everyone with love and respect.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • A lifelong learner who can be a good role model for children.
  • Bonus for CPR/First Aide Certification. May be requested to complete the class if the opportunity arises.
