Job Description

Perform functions to train and mentor individuals in assigned area to become translators and translate Scripture into text manuscripts; check manuscripts for accuracy, guided by precedent and working within the limits of established policies.

**THIS IS A SUPPORTED ROLE**. THIS MEANS THAT THE APPLICANT WOULD NOT RECEIVE A SALARY FROM SEED COMPANY. THE APPLICANT WOULD NEED TO BE ABLE TO RAISE INDIVIDUAL FINANCIAL SUPPORT THROUGH WYCLIFFE BIBLE TRANSLATORS OR OTHER PLATFORM. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  • Travel to locations where translation is in progress, as assigned and participate in or lead workshops to provide training in a wide range of skills including language analysis, exegetical and translation skills, at introductory to advanced level as needed.
  • Prepare teaching materials, audio/visual aids, pictorial materials related to developing the writing system of a language’s writing system and other aspects of translation.
  • Work with teams to check translations verse-by-verse for exegetical accuracy and communication effectiveness, and assist the team in achieving and maintaining a high quality of translation.
  • Act as a sounding-board for the discussion of exegetical and translation problems, inform the team of relevant sources of help and make suggestions for alternative solutions.
  • Provide guidance in the necessary procedures used in checking translations for consistency and in preparing manuscripts for publication.
  • Work with local leaders and other partners to plan translation programs, determine the translation and production goals to include in program.
  • Work with other partners to plan for the use of the materials being prepared; be involved in “Scripture engagement” activities where appropriate.
  • Assist in developing reference materials and other translation helps, in English or in other languages of wider communication.
  • Review translations often using “back-translation” tools to verify the accuracy and communication effectiveness of translations and to coach translator
  • Mentor and train Translation Consultants-in-training in program development, resource materials, development, and other skills.
  • Write reviews, research papers, and reports for review by linguists and others with interest in participating in translation training.
