East-West is looking for a dynamic and proactive team player to provide financial and accounting leadership for the organization. The Director of Financial Services (DFS) sits on the Operations Leadership Team and leads the accounting and donation teams to accurately and timely manage their key duties and serve our customers, internal and external, with excellence. In addition to maintaining the smooth operation of the Financial Services department, this individual works closely with all parts of the ministry, including regularly interfacing with the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), on a variety of ongoing and special projects. Further, the DFS leverages technology, banking relationships, and other solutions to steward East-West’s financial resources; oversees the annual budget and audit process; and, as appropriate, supports board committees, such as the Investment and Finance Committees.

In addition, the DFS closely partners with the Development department in receiving and processing donations and projecting revenue. The DFS protects the legal and tax-exempt status of East-West by ensuring compliance with all relevant 501(c)(3) rules and regulations and ensuring appropriate controls are in place.

 A Day in the Life of the Director of Financial Services

  • Financial reporting and analysis
    • Close fiscal year accounting records and manage annual audit process
    • Manage and lead annual financial statement audit process
    • Prepare reports for and attend Board of Directors and Finance Committee meetings
  • Strategic planning and budgeting
    • Lead and/or support key projects, such as migrating to a new accounting system, developing investment policies, providing financial analysis and projections to the Board or ELT, etc.
    • Lead the annual budget process for a $25 million nonprofit
  • Supporting and supervising
    • Provide leadership to the Financial Services department, including team meetings and information sharing
    • Directly supervise the donations team and the Accounting Manager, who manages the accounting team
    • Ensure regular process reviews and improvements with an eye toward simplicity, efficiency, and stewardship
    • Regularly interface with domestic and expat missionaries, helping them solve problems and provide solutions
    • Partner with the Development department to accept and process donations from individuals, churches, and foundations with a variety of restrictions and purposes

 The Qualifications for the Director of Financial Services

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, required
  • Seven-plus years of progressive experience in the accounting field, required
  • Demonstrated management and leadership of an accounting function and team
  • CPA designation, preferred
  • Nonprofit accounting experience, strongly preferred
  • Uphold a close and growing relationship with Jesus
  • Working knowledge of taxable income and accountable expense reimbursement plans
  • Experience with both accounting and donor management software packages, such as IntAcct and Salesforce, preferred
  • High level of competency with Microsoft Excel
  • Strong initiative, self-motivation, delegation, and ability to complete tasks on time
  • Problem solver and displays the ability to look at complex scenarios, dissect them, research, and propose correct solutions
  • Ability to listen well to service-related problems and offer help and solutions
